Thread: dimmer on magnetic low voltage lighting ?

dimmer on magnetic low voltage lighting ?

What happens if the cassette dimmer is used to control some recessed low voltage MR16 lighting? I am pretty sure it is magnetic transformer.
    Is there any safety hazard?

Sorry for such a basic question but I see that the non dimming switches can be used on magnetic loads - was wondering if this holds for the dimmers.

    Thanks in advance

    hgmobile,

Unfortunately, the Caseta Wireless (PD-6WCL or PD-3PCL) dimmers are not rated to control Magnetic Low Voltage lighting. Lutron does not recommend using the PD-6WCL or PD-3PCL dimmers on MLV loads because it could damage the switch or transformer over time.

If choosing a Caseta Wireless control, we would recommend using the PD-5WS-DV switch on Magnetic Low Voltage loads.

Is this still the case? The document below, on Lutron's web site, indicates that MLV is supported by the PD-6WCL.

    skyjumper,

The PD-6WCL is not rated to control MLV. This is an old version of the spec sheet and thank you for bring it to our attention. The updated spec sheet can be found here: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocum...mer%20Spec.pdf.

Lutron's new dimmer PD-10NXD is now rated to control Magnetic Low-Voltage. REF: http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocum...369919_WEB.pdf. Just wanted to update this response as it comes up in a google search and caused confusion with a customer.
