Thread: HT room lighting with zones/scenes - Newbie needs help

  1. #1

Question HT room lighting with zones/scenes - Newbie needs help

I am planning to have 4 lighting zones/scenes in my HT room

    - Rope light
    - Sconce
    - Front stage/screen can lights (LED)
    - Rest of the Can lights (LED)

I am looking for a solution that allows me to control (on/off and dim) these zones individually from wall switch and a phone app. I would like to be able to achieve this with a single (or at the most 2) wall keypads. I want a solution compatible with both apple and android. AFAIK Insteon does offer a multiple scene keypads but has poor reviews. Can it be done by caseta? What products will I need to achieve it?

Check the rope lights. LED rope lights typically don't like to be dimmed.

Caseta is the least expensive option but doesn't have true keypads. RA2 Select would offer the same options.

RadioRA 2 is more expensive but offers true keypads. You would also have the basics to expand to whole home lighting control (200 zones).

Thanks for your input. I am looking for a simple system for 1 room only. In case of Caseta, do I need to install 4 separate dimmer switches for 4 group of lights to control them independently from wall and phone app?

Yes, you will need one dimmer/switch for each group of lights that you want to control separately. This includes dimming. For example, you may want one group at 50% and another group at 75%.

You will also need a bridge to use the phone app.

i strongly urge you to spend a few dollars more to get the pro bridge which will allow you to integrate the lighting control with programs like Simple Control etc to integrate your theatre and lighting in one interface. I would also warn you about using the retail dimmers with low wattage led lighting. You need about 25 watts of load to get the regular dimmers to work well with approved compatible led lights. Others here with low loads have installed MLC's when they have had issues with low total loads on a switch or dimmer.
