How do I send out commands?

We received this question from a customer, and thought others might be interested in this topic...

Can I send data commands out from my RadioRA 2 system to third party shade controller?

Unfortunately the RadioRA2 system is not able to send commands to third party system. For controlling third party shades we would recommend using the CCO's on the VCRX unit.

It doesn't sound feasible AT ALL to me to do this with CCOs on VCRXs. Depending on how many shades you have, it would cost you a fortune, and the interfacing would be a nightmare. How about using the Phantom buttons on the main repeater alongside eventghost to make this happen. It might require writing a plugin for your shades (depending on what they are and how they communicate) - but this would be a way more flexible (and low cost) solution. At any rate, I disagree with Craig's statement "RA2 system is not able to send commands to a third party system" - that is completely false.

Now, if your shades would only accept hardwired interfacing, then yeah, the VCRX might be the only way to go...

OK, so I thought about this a little more. You would not use Phantom buttons for this because you want to take a real input from the RA2 system and transfer that as an output to a third party - phantom buttons really work nicely the other way around (although if you got fancy enough, you could still use them as outputs by monitoring the LED states in some scenarios - but I don't think this would apply in your application)... so, you would just map your keypad/pico button in eventghost to control your shade. Any action in your system can be driven as an output to a third party with the monitoring capability of RA2. I guess that's the point I was trying to get across.

Well it is true that a RA2 system cannot send a user-specified command. But as you are saying, it is possible if you have an external device that can detect RA2 events and translate them to other devices. There is also a Somfy device that is able to detect RA2 events on its own and translate them to wireless commands for their shades.

well unfortunatley they don't seem to know, they only refer to the urtsi11 which you need to send serial comands to, which RA2 doesn't do. Thanks anyway

Ah well you probably spoke to some rep who is not well informed. Their part number is 1870210. You may have to request to speak to an automation specialist.

Somfy offers A Gateway (product name is Translator) that allows the control of Somfy RTS or ILT motors using Lutron's RA2, GEQS, HWQS or Quantum system. The Translator connects to the Main Repeater or NWK Integration device and monitors button presses. The Translator then converts the Lutron button presses into Somfy commands. Feel free yo contact me with questions. Mobile APPS work as well.
