Lutron fully variable fan control with pull-chain fan

Many posts elsewhere on the web indicate we should not use dimmer switches as fan controls, because they limit the power to the fan and can cause fan motor problems.
But I see Lutron provides a "fully variable fan control".

So, is this product safe to use with pull-chain fans that have 3-speeds, or is that not a good choice for the fan control?

    Hello Salis,

    Thank you for your post!

You would not want to use a fully variable fan control on a 3-speed fan, nor a dimmer, as both will cause the fan motor to hum and potentially damaged the motor. The 3 speed fans are only rated for a constant voltage, but different capacitances. A fully variable control and dimmer both turn the voltage on and off 120 times per second while reducing the voltage. The 3 speed motor is not designed to handle this.

    Hope this helps!

I installed a TG-600P dimmer switch to a Hunter light/fan combination. The dimmer slide controls the fan. Can you advise on how to get it to control the light, and let the fan be on the pull chain only ? ? ?

    Hello jackt2,

    Thank you for your post!

Based on the information you have provided it appears the switched leg of the TG-600P is mis-wired to the fan. Usually, a fan will have a black and blue wire. The blue wire is the light switched leg. So you would wire the blue to the switched leg of the TG-600P. As for getting the fan to be controlled via pull chain only you would need an additional constant hot wire to only the black of the fan.

If the fan does not have black and blue wires, we would recommend confirming which wire is the light leg with the fan manufacturer.

If the fan does not have an additional hot we would recommend consulting a local electrician to help in wiring the fan properly to the new constant hot.

    Hope this helps!
