Lutron PD-6WCL-WH Caseta Dimmer getting very warm

    Hi all,

I have a Lutron PD-6WCL-WH Caseta Wireless In-Wall Smart Dimmer Switch hooked up to a chandelier in my living room.

    This chandelier has 12 x 25-Watt Incandescent light bulbs ( This model: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G1R2KT0 )

So the total wattage of the chandelier is 300 Watts.

The dimmer is rated at 600Watts for Incandescent bulbs, as per this spec that I found online:
    http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocum...369987_ENG.pdf

(Look at the very last entry in the Table "Load Type and Capacity - Dimmers").

However, the dimmer gets pretty warm after a while of having the chandelier turned on.

Anybody knows why this would be?

    Many thanks in advance!

This amount of heat is normal for that sized load.
See the "Heat Dissipation" section of http://www.lutron.com/en-US/Educatio...ingBasics.aspx for an explanation.
The more you dim the lights, the cooler the dimmer will run.

    Brian,
    Thank you for the explanation.
The document you linked above says:

    Heat Dissipation

During normal operation, dimmers get warm to the touch. Wallbox dimmer efficiency is typically around 99%. The other 1% is dissipated in the dimmer as heat. So, a 600 W load on a 600 W dimmer would produce around 6 watts of heat. This is approximately the heat generated from a small nightlight. Operating on its rated load, Lutron dimmers will stay below the UL limits of 140º F (60º C)

    This "
140º F (60º C)" temperature -- is this supposed to be measured on the outside surface of the dimmer, or the inside?

If you are using non screwless plates with metal screws, the metal screw connects to the heat sink. This will make the everything feel warmer. I had one customer who insisted on traditional SS wall plates. This made the plate itself part of the heat sink. Bad idea!

Most of the heat is dissipated through the heat sink on the front. Dimmers in a brick wall will run warmer than those in a sheet rock wall.

The dimmers do get warm. You should feel comfortable leaving your hand on the dimmer.
