If you're using remote dimmers there shouldn't be any excess wires - the remotes communicate with the dimmer over the existing wires in a typical 3-way. See page 7 of the pdf here for wiring schematics. http://www.lutron.com/TechnicalDocum...25_English.pdf

If you don't want a remote dimmer switch in every 3-way location, its a great place to put in a keypad without having to use a hybrid keypad, especially in retrofit applications where it may be hard to find places to put standard keypads...
