Cutting down a faceplate

Not the most technical question here but has anyone found the best way to cut a faceplate down that doesn't fit into a corner? I need to shave about a 3/8" off a 3 gang to fit. The prior screw style faceplate was also cut down. I tried a mitre saw and wood blade and it just shattered. I've found fine tooth circular and jigsaw blades work well on PVC and before I start to experiment I'm wondering if anyone has found the best saw / blade combo when you need to cut off a slice of a screwless faceplate. BTW the underside cut fine but the top snap in piece shattered. I think I just got lucky on the bottom piece.

how about a tabletop belt sander? Just sand the side down until its the width you need? Just dont go too crazy and melt the plastic once you get close.

After reading, I think about a fine-toothed saw blade immediately. A fine-toothed saw blade is less likely to cause the faceplate to shatter or crack. You can use a circular saw or jigsaw with a fine-toothed blade to cut the faceplate down to size. What do you think about it?
