Do I just replace it with a new one? I couldn't find this particular model, which could be 28 years old, dating from when the house was built. Is there a new model I should use?

Hello, dimmers getting warm while being used is normal. Depending on the load being controlled a dimmer can reach up to 140 degrees above room temperature, the more lights being controlled the warmer the dimmer will get. This is still a current model number but there is also an updated model which is SCL-153P. The newer model is rated for use with approved LEDs and improve performance if you are using LEDs with the older dimmer.
