I wired a dimmer switch in one of the 3 way legs on a 4 way circuit. The 3 way switch would not operate unless the 4 way switch was turned on. What did I do wrong?

The switches have 2 conductors (called travelers, normally red and black) that run between them. There is a common at each end. One end brings power in, the other takes it up to the light. It sounds like you have one of the travelers swapped with the common. The travelers should come from the same cable.
