What does "remote" mean wrt switches and dimmers?

And what is the electrical difference between a 'remote' switch and a non-remote one?
And does it matter which type is placed where?

(Oops - This should have been in General-RadioRA2; is there a way to move a post?)

The Remote (RD-RD) is not a load-controlling device. It communicates with the dimmer (RRD-6CL,NA, etc) to adjust on/off or brightness. Neutral wire dimmers must be on the load side, while no-neutral dimmers (RRD-6CL,10D,6D) can be anywhere in the circuit. See attached diagram.

    Thanks!
