Using NA Dimmer To Test CL, ND, D Capability?

I know the right way to be sure if a fixture works with a particular dimmer is to put it in or see if it's been tested by Lutron in the case of LED. I have a fixture running auto phase on a 6NA and I think it's MLV and am not sure, and I'm curious if I could get away with using a "lesser" dimmer on it and re-purpose the 6NA for something "more tricky". If I selected forward-phase and it worked fine, would that be telling of the likelihood of another dimmer working? Thanks!
