connection between dimmer, pico and smart bridge

how does the connections between Caseta's dimmer, Pico and Smart Bridge work?
Right now we setup the system by pairing the dimmer to the Smart Bridge, then pair the Pico to Smart Bridge and assign it to the dimmer. From this, I assumed the Pico controls the dimmer through Smart bridge? but when I take the Smart Bridge offline, the Pico would still work with the dimmer, does that means the Pico always hold both connections to the dimmer and Smart Bridge?

The Pico remote communicates to both the Smart Bridge and Caseta Wireless dimmer.
